The Oak Park Art League will hold an event in February where people can make a themed keepsake.
Art of Mardi Gras: Throws, Masks & Mementos is a program where attendees can create their own Mardi Gras keepsakes with other artists in the community. The event is part of the Oak Park Art League's Gallery After Dark series. Participants will get to create hand-decorated parade throws like painted coconuts and decorative cups. The instructor for the workshop is Dave Palomares, an artist who has worked with organizations such as the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and Lillstreet Art Center.
The Oak Park Art League is an organization that helps people access art by offering public programs and exhibitions. The group was originally known as The Austin, Oak Park, and River Forest Art League before it was renamed in 1970. There are art courses offered by the league on many topics, including travel sketching, oil painting, and advanced drawing. The organization even offers programs for children, such as Family stARTs and Teen Figure Drawing.
The Mardi Gras-themed creative workshop will be on Thursday, February 5th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The cost to attend the event is a suggested donation of $10. Doors to the workshop will open at 5:50 pm. Only those who are 18 and older can partake in Palomares' class.
