Earlier this year, a survey of Oak Park residents was conducted to ask their opinion of their park district, and the results have now been unveiled.
Aqity Research’s president, Jeff Andreasen, presented the results to the board of commissioners of the park district, revealing that of all the departments in the village, only the public library scores higher with residents than the park district. Not only that, but it won better marks than almost all park districts, not merely in Chicagoland, but throughout Illinois. However, despite giving the parks a high rating, residents still want further improvements; specifically, a fitness center, indoor track, and indoor pool. They also criticized the maintenance at some facilities, and the lack of parking.
Residents also noted that there is little programming aimed at young people of college age, while another result goes to the other end of the age range. Andreasen said middle-aged people do not use the parks often, because they feel there are no activities they would enjoy. He noted that ironically, the district is doing well in providing programs for much older people, who gave it high marks. Instead, it is the middle-aged, “empty nest”-age residents who feel left out.
