Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the world's most famous architects. In the early 20th century, he had a workshop and studio in Oak Park, and the city boasts a number of his buildings.
One of the most famous, Unity Temple, has been undergoing restoration and is now only a few weeks from its reopening. The renovations were begun in April, 2014, at a cost of $23m.
The temple's executive director, Health Hutchison, says crews are working on the details now, putting finishing touches on art glass, plaster, paint, and other details of the project. A great effort was clearly made to keep the building as authentic as possible. To that end, all the woodwork—some 10 miles of it—was removed, cataloged, and transported to Peoria, where it was cleaned and refinished. After that, it was all reinstalled, with every piece of wood returned to its original position.
The building is a home to the Unitarian Universalists, who have been using the United Lutheran Church while the building was being renovated.
Representatives of the news media are already asking to take tours of the building, anticipating its reopening. Unity Temple is set to open its doors once again on June 11.
