The Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex (RCRC) in Oak Park has been undergoing renovations since March 2013, and residents who are eager to see the new space will finally have a chance this weekend.
The renovations include expanding the ice rink to 85 x 200 feet (which is the size of an official rink) and installing a sports field that has new lighting and a surface of synthetic turf. The field will be able to be used by players in a number of sports. There are improvements to the pool area, and a new wading pool for children that offers fun water features. Finally, there are three new meeting/activity rooms, including one with a special floor, mirrors, and ballet bars.
The complex was first built in 1962, and discussions about its renovation started in 2007. Diane Stanke, who is with the park district, called the renovation a “community-driven process”, since the improvements reflect the residents' requests.
The new complex will be open to residents from noon until 3:00 pm tomorrow afternoon. The event is free, and visitors will enjoy treats such as access to the ice arena and pool, the new rooms, and the wading pool. A luau party is planned and celebrities slated to be present include Olympic skaters Emery Lehman and Aaron Parchem.
The RCRC could work with brochure printers to create a booklet for visitors, listing all the new amenities.
