A number of improvements are in the works in 2019 for Madison Street, and Oak Park officials are inviting business owners and residents to an open house to learn more about them.
The open house will give participants a chance to ask questions about the improvements planned for Madison Street, including converting the street to a three-lane thoroughfare. Other changes include making it more pedestrian-friendly by building handicapped-accessible ramps, marking crosswalks, constructing bump-outs that make crossings shorter, enhancing signals at crossings, and providing pedestrian safety zones in the middle of the street.
In addition to these improvements, there will be new paving from Austin Boulevard to Harlem Avenue, clearly-marked lanes for bicycles, posted bus stops, and more parking spaces. The project also includes major improvements to the infrastructure, such as refurbished or entire new sewer lines placed underground along Madison, which will remain open throughout the entire project.
Village representatives, as well as people from the engineering firm handling the construction will be attending the open house, where they'll be available to answer residents' questions about the timeline of the project, driveway access, parking, and similar issues. The workshop offers officials a good opportunity to work with Print shops to create a timeline of the project for residents.
The open house will be held February 21, from 6.00 pm until 8.00 pm, at the Percy Julian Middle School on Ridgeland Avenue.
