Officials of Oak Park and River Forest High School are asking for comments from the public on upcoming projects that require major construction, among them long-term facilities as well as a new swimming pool. According to the Chicago Tribune, school officials say student enrollment was about 3,300, but that number is expected to increase over the next five years.
Officials want community members to weigh in on plans for long-term facilities, which will create more space for education, enlarge the cafeteria, renovate locker rooms in the fieldhouse, and consider other projects, including a swimming pool.
One proposal would locate the pool beneath part of the baseball field, on the west side of the campus. Phil Prale, assistant superintendent, said the configuration of the land doesn't allow the school to build out; it has to build up instead. This lead to a proposal to build multi-story additions on the east and west sides of the building, and reusing any space that had formerly been used for the pool.
Officials hope to pick a final design for the pool at a July 28 meeting. They will go on to present a resolution for funding for the project by August 16. The resolution may require a referendum vote this coming November.
