The Village of Oak Park is looking for artists to work on its Mini-Mural program.
The aim of the program is to create murals painted on the retaining walls that line the Green Line corridor, turning them from gray concrete to colorful scenes. The Oak Park Area Arts Council is the organization behind the effort.
Each artist selected will receive $500 for materials before they start their mural, and another $500 when they finish. The murals vary in size from approximately eleven-by-six feet to eight-by-six feet.
All area artists are invited to take part, whether or not they live in Oak Park. The concepts chosen will be selected by a panel made up of Area Arts Council judges, and others active in the arts locally. Officials organizing contests like this might use flyer printing to let people know about the opportunity.
One mural this year is to be painted to honor Val Camilleti, who owned Val's Halla Records, an Oak Park landmark, for 46 years. This mural is to be painted on a wall on South Boulevard, across from the spot where she opened her first store.
The first round deadline for applications is April 12. On May 2, the first successful 10 artists will be chosen from this field of applicants. In July, 10 more artists' concepts will be selected. Those interested in the July selection need to apply by Friday, June 14.
