After years of work and planning, the Oak Park River Forest Museum recently opened to its first visitors. The facility is the brainchild of the Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest, which named the museum.
The society moved from Pleasant Home, a prairie-style structure designed by George W. Maher in 1897, two years ago and relocated to the former Cicero Fire House No. 2 on Lake Street. After weeks of renovations and fundraising efforts, the museum hosted an opening this month, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Visitors who went to the new museum were treated to a preview of an exhibit called ‘From the Home Front to the Battle Front: Oak Park, River Forest and World War I’. The exhibit commemorated the entrance of the US into the war.
At the opening, guests could enter raffles, enjoy games and refreshments, and take tours of the new museum. For a couple of hours, Oak Park Fire Department parked one of its fire engines out front for children to explore. The engine also reminds visitors that the building was once a firehouse – a function it served during the turn of the 20th Century.
Events like this are both fun and informative, and can be made even more pleasant if organizers work with a brochure printing company to create Booklets about the exhibits and the venue.
