Board members of Oak Park's Park District have made some decisions about the community center currently under consideration.
They have settled on a building comprising 107,000 square feet, which could cost as much as $43m. Finding the funds for the project is the district’s next concern, and it will be a challenge, according to the park's executive director, Jan Arnold.
Over the next few months, Arnold meet with private individuals who might be interested in providing some of the money. He is also considering approaching corporations to offer them naming rights, as well as examining the district's funds to see if there is money available there. He is also thinking about a public bond issue.
Earlier this year, the village completed a feasibility study that determined what residents wanted to see in their community center. Among the amenities planned are three gymnasiums, an aquatics center, a fitness center, a child-care center, and a cafe.
There would be six full-time employees on staff, with a number of part-time employees rounding out the roster. Funds for annual operations would come from membership fees, building rentals, and fees charged for programs at the center.
The project is still in the very early stages, and no bids have been sought, and no designs have been submitted.
