A new Maple Avenue has been created in Oak Park, and it will require streetscaping. The effort will be paid for by the owner of a private building, and the village, who have agreed to split the costs of the improvements. Village trustees agreed that SDOP Corporation will pay either $50,000, or half the cost, whichever is less.
The new part of Maple Avenue runs between Lake Street and North Boulevard, and is part of the Emerson development. According to a memo from village officials, the west side of the new roadway will need pedestrian lighting and concrete paving at a cost of about $64,000, while other work, including planting trees, will add approximately another $25,000 to the bill. It will also be necessary to streetscape the east side of the avenue to match the work done on the west.
Bill McKenna, the village engineer, said the plan called for adding trees with grates, and changing current lights with light that were salvaged from another village thoroughfare, Westgate Street. According to McKenna, transplanting the trees and lights will make the new avenue resemble the rest of the village.
Maple Avenue will occupy land that formerly housed two village-owned parking lots. The lots were shut down so the project could go ahead.
