Big band music returns to the Chicago area soon, with a harvest ballroom dance scheduled for later this month in Oak Park.
The dance will be held at the Oak Park Arms, a retirement community in the village. The event is free and open to the public.
Entertainment will be provided by the Freenotes, a big band based in Chicago's western suburbs. Lead by Ron Chocola, the band plays hits from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, made famous by band leaders like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie. The band has nearly 20 members, and features a female vocalist, according to Chocola.
The band leader said his organization had played at Oak Park Arms several times, and the audiences, which are sizable, have always been appreciative of their work. Chocola said his band plays a bit of everything, and that this kind of ballroom dance is becoming a lost art.
Heather Lindstrom, who is the marketing director for the facility, says the dances give prospective residents a chance to tour the community. Tours will be available from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm, the day of the dance.
The dance is scheduled for October 22, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
