For the 44th season, Oak Park will welcome its upcoming Farmers' Market today, focusing on cross-pollination.
In this case, cross-pollination does not refer to bees and plants, but local businesses and organizations. Officials from the market will highlight the way in which these entities help to make and keep Oak Park green. Their interactions will be part of the Go Green Days, which are celebrated annually during the Market's first two weeks.
During the Go Green Days, children's activities are planned, including seed potting, and several organizations will be on hand to provide information about sustainability efforts at the local level. Members of the Village's Environment & Energy Commission, and the Village Board of Trustees will be on hand to discuss environmental issues.
Go Green Days are not the only reason to go to the market. Opening day sees bread, frozen meat, eggs, cheese, honey, plants, flowers, vegetables, fresh fruits, fresh coffee, and donuts returning for another year. People can also enjoy live bluegrass music.
Many of the vendors have been coming to the market for years, while others are new this year. The newcomers include a vendor selling plants native to Illinois that are suitable to be taken home and planted, and Sitka Salmon Shares, who will be the first vendor ever to sell fish at the market.
The market opens for the season at 7:00 am today (May 18), and organizers can use brochure printers to create Booklets that list vendors and products.
