An evening of jazz is on the schedule for Oak Park.
The Paul Ashford Trio is anchored by Paul Ashford on drums. Ashford is a native of Chicago who grew up with soul music, blues, and jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. He was drawn to the drums when he was a child, enjoying the rhythm and beat. His parents understood his talent and bought him a drum set when he was ten, and his career started there.
That same year Paul formed his first band, Evans Street, with some of his friends, and had the pleasure of winning first place in a Battle of the Bands contest that was held at Park West Theater in Chicago. Their win at the contest led to other opportunities, as Evans Street was contacted by other musicians. When Ashford was 23, the band was the house band at a promotional event Janet Jackson did for “Control,” her hit 1986 album.
Ashford has been playing the blues in Chicago for years, playing at such venues as Kingston Mines and Big Daddy’s. He toured and played drums for eight years with John Gibraldi, who goes by the name Studebaker John.
Now Oak Park fans will have a chance to see this jazz master for themselves. The Paul Ashford Trio will appear May 1 at 7.00 pm at Compound Yellow on Lake Street. Brochure printing can be used to create informative programs for events like this.
