Oak Park’s Animal Care League held a pet parade known as the “Mutt Strut” on September 10 in Oak Park.
Dozens of animals and their human parents took part in the parade, which was held in Carroll Park. Even though the weather was threatening, the turnout was good, and the shelter raised approximately $11,000 for its operations.
Kira Robson, the shelter’s executive director, said the turnout and participation of Oak Park residents was thrilling. Even though it sprinkled all morning, people simply brought their umbrellas and walked in the rain. This was the first year for the event, which Robson deemed a success.
After taking a two-mile walk through the neighborhood that surrounds Carroll Park, participants took part in various contests with their four-legged friends. There were contests to determine the best canine costume, the best owner/dog costume combination, dog/owner lookalike contest, and the sweetest/cutest ‘bully breed’. There was also a contest to determine the ‘muttiest’ mutt, and a game inspired by musical chairs called ‘musical mutts’. Robson said she even saw one man who had put a lion mane on his dog, while he wore a lion tamer’s costume.
