Hot lunches at local schools still being negotiated
Elk Grove Township Elementary School District 59 is still trying to get a vendor for a hot lunch program for their students. This comes after its former vendor Sodexo pulled out of its contract after losing money amounting to nearly $1 million over a two year period.
The former program provided cold breakfasts and hot lunches to the district’s three junior highs and eleven elementary schools. The students have been without the program was discontinued at the end of last April. Currently the children are receiving hot meals from off-site kitchens.
Two immediate temporary options will involve renegotiating with Sodexo to provide hot meals until the end of the year at a higher rate or procuring a new provider. Local vendor bids are even more expensive. The Illinois State Board of Education in conjunction with the National School Lunch Program which reimburses funds for the reduced priced and free lunch programs that affect more than 4,000 students in the district will also have to agree to any final decision.
Future options include the possibility of building a kitchen in the newly proposed administration building.
Concerned parents may want to get this information into their social or business newsletters before any newsletter printing gets done for this month. They may also want to get some fliers out to neighbors and fellow parents to get support for their views on this.
