For the 29th year in a row, the City of Wilmington has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The announcement was made recently by Mayor Mike Purzycki and Robert S. Greco, Wilmington’s Management and Budget Director.
The GFOA gave Wilmington the award because it presented a budget to its residents that is both well-organized, and easy for them to understand. In addition, the award this year is particularly notable because GFOA award Wilmington an “Outstanding” because it met 16 out of 27 criteria the Association sets. Last year, only one criterion was judged “Outstanding” by the GFOA. The new budget is greatly improved from previous years, particularly in the way it sets strategic budget goals that match the priorities set by the city administration. Officials could use Logo Design to incorporate honors like their logos for official documents.
Greco said that his department works hard every year to create a high-quality budget, which provides complete information but is easy to understand. He added he wanted residents to see how the city spends their tax dollars, and the number of services provided to them.
The criteria the GFOA uses to determine the awards are set at the national level and include whether or not the budget as published meets guidelines as a device for communications, a guide to operations, a financial plan, and a policy document. There are fourteen additional criteria within these four categories.
