It might not be as famous as the Comedy Cellar in Greenwich Village, but a new comedy club has opened in Wilmington, and like its New York City counterpart, it's in a basement. According to Delaware Online, Spaceboy Clothing, a shop located on Market Street in Wilmington, has a cellar that's perfect for comedy.
The idea of performing in the basement of a clothing store may be unusual, but it's proving to be a success. The project, known as the Friday Night Comedy Series, is the brainchild of Brandon Jackson, a comedian based in New Castle, and the shop's co-owners, David Sanchez and Noah Gabriel. Jackson, who has been performing throughout Delaware for several years, hosts a show at 1984 in Wilmington every Wednesday, and has open mic nights at Santa Fe Mexican Grill, also in Wilmington. But Jackson wanted somewhere that more closely resembled the comedy clubs in New York: small, underground, and fun.
When he visited Spaceboy, which has hosted approximately 100 music and arts shows in the seven years it has occupied its current space, Jackson assumed comedians would perform in the store itself, but soon found out he was mistaken. He was taken to the basement and found the perfect space to transform into a comedy club. The shows began in April and continue on Friday nights.
Events such as this may benefit from a poster printing company to help announce forthcoming shows.
