The theater company is presenting William Shakespeare's “The Tempest,” his last play, and perhaps his most fanciful. The story is set on an island where Prospero, the deposed Duke of Milan, has been marooned with his daughter, Miranda. A sorcerer of tremendous power, Prospero causes a violent storm that wrecks the ship carrying his enemies, bringing them to his island, and within his grasp. Among the most memorable characters in the play are the sprite Ariel, and the “monster” Caliban, both enslaved by Prospero.
The Delaware Shakespeare (DelShakes) organization is a professional theater company that collaborates with the best professional theater artists in the area, giving them the resources they need to excel. DelShakes also nurtures young performers just starting their careers, and runs a number of educational programs. One of the company's stated goals is to always achieve artistic excellence.
