In order to make it easier for people to do their holiday shopping, and to help support local businesses, Mike Purzycki, Wilmington’s mayor, and Patrick Carter, the director of the Department of Finance, want to remind everyone that parking is free in downtown Wilmington at the moment.
It is not necessary for people to pay the parking meters in the city’s Downtown Business District, or in the Riverfront Business District. The Downtown Business District is defined as the area from 12th Street to 2nd Street, and from Washington Street to French Street. Parking is free from noon until 6:00 pm weekdays during this special holiday period. On official holidays, which include days like Christmas, drivers can park all day for free. Officials dealing with changes like this can use poster printing to create appropriate signage for the area.
There are some exceptions to the holiday parking rules, however. First, parking is limited to a two hour period, and streets that are marked as ‘tow-away zones’ will still enforce that policy at the meters during the times they are designated as such. All other traffic regulations, except for paying the meter, remain in effect. There is still no parking allowed at fire hydrants or in areas designated for buses, and double-parking, or parking too near pedestrian crossings, is prohibited.
The holiday free-parking policy is now in effect, and will last through December 31.
