In a recent announcement, the news was made public that the DuPont Theatre, which has been staging plays since 1913, will be taken over by The Grand Opera House as part of its purchase agreement for the theater company.
The opera house will also purchase the Wilmington theater’s related assets and take over the lease of the building where it currently holds its performances. After the transaction has been completed, it will become known as the ‘Playhouse on Rodney Street’.
The CEO of DuPont, Ellen Kullman, is confident that this move will allow new and greater experiences for theater regulars, while continuing in the tradition that made the venue popular. Meanwhile, the Chair of Grand’s Board of Directors, Skip Pennella, expressed his happiness to be taking over such a historic and well-loved institution.
Those wishing to purchase tickets for upcoming plays and performances can still do so at the current DuPont box office, as well as on its website, and current season subscriptions will continue to be honored.
