About 20 children from the Wilmington area tried learning to ride a bicycle recently, thanks to the Wilmington Police Department.
On November 21, police taught a class in how to ride a bike. Master Corporal Brian Witte, who has been on the force for 20 years and is a certified bike instructor, directed the class. Once the kids, some as young as four, had the bikes adjusted and their helmets on, they took turns riding on the basketball court at Wilmington's Police Athletic League.
The training was run jointly by the Police Athletic League and the Wilmington Police, and enabled officers to reach out to the community's children in positive ways. Sergeant Andrea Janvier noted that learning to ride will get children out-of-doors and exercising, as well as allowing them to interact with law enforcement officials in a fun way.
Those children who wanted to participate but did not have a bike were able to borrow one from the police. Participants who needed a helmet, or brought one that did not fit well, were given new ones.
The event was fun for everyone, and another bike clinic is slated for this Saturday, November 28, at 9:00 am. Since time is short, police might have spent the week with a poster printing company to create and post notices throughout the area about the next class.
