History comes alive in Wilmington

History buffs, or people who are looking for an interesting afternoon, have a special event they could put on their Calendars.

The Tilton Tea and History Event is coming up soon at the Tilton Mansion. Attendees will enjoy their tea in the mansion's ballroom, where they will also learn about the Boston Tea Party as well as the Philadelphia Tea Party, and how Dr. James Tilton was involved. The service includes mini pastries, scones, tea sandwiches, and a selection of various teas.

Dr. Tilton, who built the mansion, was born in 1745, graduated in 1768 from the College of Philadelphia, and earned his degree as an M.D. In 1771. H began practicing in Dover, and at the same time, served in the Kent County Militia. His unit was called up during the Revolutionary War, as part of the continental Army's 1st Delaware Regiment, where he served as the regimental surgeon. His service was honorable and he saw battle at Princeton, Trenton, White Plains, and Brooklyn.

Tilton built his mansion beginning in 1802, enlarging and improving a structure built in 1766 by Bancroft Woodcock, who named it Bellevue, which means “beautiful view” in French. The name was fitting, as the location of Bellevue gave Woodcock a view of the Philadelphia skyline as well as the countryside.

The Tilton Tea is scheduled for 2.00 pm on January 28, and the admission is $35 per person. Graphic design can be used to create attractive programs for events like this.
