What's Happening in Wilmington, DE…

The local Girl Develop it chapter was launched October 21 at 1313 Innovation, which provides space for nonprofits and start-ups. Over 80 people, including a few men, mostly from Wilmington and the local area, signed up.

Girl Develop It is a nonprofit, international organization that provides resources, including judgment-free and affordable training, to women who want to learn about software and web development. Participants must be 18 or older.

Megan Anthony, who works at Wilmington's 1313 Innovation, was instrumental in the introduction of the chapter. She was tired of feeling out of place as she tried to learn about such aspects as the web framework called ‘Ruby on Rails’.

Anthony says she has not been dismissed or demeaned by her male counterparts, but she'd like to feel more sure of herself, and have other women in the field to talk to. That's why she and Joni Trythall, a local product designer, felt it would be helpful to bring the Girl Develop It organization to Wilmington.

The organization will hold its first class on October 29. The free is $20, and the subject is web concepts. Future activities might include two-day workshops in coding, as well as semi-monthly social gatherings.

Girl Develop It management might like to work with a postcard printing company on a mailer to residents, informing them of the organization.
