The event, which is a bike ride, is open to the public and raises money for Eastern CT Cancer Institute patients.
Pete LaValley, a radiation therapist at Hartford Hospital and member of Nerac Earth, started the fundraiser when he observed patients and their families in financial trouble with the expenses of treatment. He said:
"I felt bad for these people. [They] had worked their whole lives to become victim to a terrible disease that consumes their savings, quality of life and the golden years that we all hope for."
Each participant has the choice to bike for 65, 45, 25, or 20 miles starting at Stafford High School. There are areas on each path where the cyclists can rest, and food and drinks are provided.
A local printing company is likely to have been busily preparing for the event, because the first 200 people to register for it will receive a T-shirt. Technical support will be offered by the Tolland Bicycle Shop on race day. A raffle will be held for bicycles and Coyote Flaco will provide lunch.
This year’s ride will take place on Sunday, June 22.
