Farm opens doors and trails to community

The Strong Family Farm in Vernon will participate in two annual summer events.

As part of Connecticut Open House Day, the Strong Family Farm will open its doors to the public. This is the 16th year of the event, which happens on the second Saturday in June around Connecticut. Tourist attractions and educational organizations invite the local community to see what the state has to offer such as films, art, history, and family fun.

The Strong Family Farm will give out seed packets to help residents start a garden and give tips on growing them. Guests will be able to visit the farm store, take a tour, and watch the chickens.

Later in the month, the farm will host its 7th Chicken Run. Participants can choose from a 1.5 mile or 5K course. Kids can run a 0.25 mile for fun. The children's race starts one hour after check-in starts, and the other two races start 30 minutes after the children's race.

The run is a popular annual event and there will be more besides it to do during the day for all ages. The Backyard Chicken program's chickens and Clucky T. Rooster will be there, along with the Hop-A-Long 4-H Club rabbits. LuAnn's Bakery goods, canned goods, and eggs will be available at the Farm Store. Guests can also visit the store for Vintage Tools and Treasures.

The Open House is on June 13, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Chicken Run is on June 28 starting at 7:30. The farm is a non-profit with its own Logo Design that shows it was established in 1878.
