Marsh field trip planned for April

As the weather warms, people are looking forward to being able to enjoy outside activities.

The Hartford Audubon Society is planning and hosting an upcoming field trip to Laurel Marsh in Manchester, a short distance from Vernon. Event participants will follow the Laurel Marsh Trail as it winds beside the Hockanum River, leading through wetlands, meadows, forests, and parts of the Hop Brook, giving hikers a chance to see a variety of birds.

In order to make the outing safe for everyone, health guidelines will be observed, and were recently updated. Anyone who wants to take part much pre-register by sending an email to the group leader, and the number of attendees will be capped at six. Proper masks, not gaiters or bandannas, must cover both the nose and mouth and are required to be worn at all times.

In addition, hikers will be asked to remain at least six feet apart throughout the entire event, and to bring their own hand sanitizer in case none is available. People are strongly discouraged from sharing scopes and binoculars, though they can be shared after being sanitized with wipes if there is no other option. Finally, anyone who does not feel well is asked to remain at home. Flyer printing can be used by organizers of events like this to create handouts specifying the guidelines.

Participants should plan to meet at the parking lot for the Laurel Marsh Trail at 8.00 am on April 24.
