Vernon remembers soldiers during Memorial Day

Two memorial services and a parade was how Rockville, a town in the city of Vernon, celebrated Memorial Day this year.

This year was also the 70th anniversary of Germany's surrender in World War II and the win for the Allies.

According to Dan Champagne, Mayor of Vernon, the holiday celebrates those who lost their lives for our country to be free, men and women alike. Joe Courtney, Democratic US Representative, was grateful to the American Legion and other groups who put together the festivities. Commander and American Legion Post 14 representative Rich Provencher reminded the public that Memorial Day is not just the start of summer and it is a personal celebration for those who have served. Some of our countries historic wars come up during this day but there is more of a focus on current skirmishes in the Middle East in which the United States is evolved.

Memorial Day was started on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan to honor those lost in the Civil War. In 1873, New York celebrated it for the first time on May 30th. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially assigned the last Monday in May.

It's likely that the organizers and participants in the parade contacted a local Print company to provide Flyers and Posters to promote the event, or even full size Banners for those taking part.
