Next week, the town of Vernon will vote at a referendum for or against building a senior center.
There was a unanimous vote at the council meeting last month on a bond issue going through before this month ended. The council wants to buy 135 Bolton Road, which used to be the TicketNetwork head office and totals nearly 14,000 square feet. It plans to buy the building with $1.2m of the bonds and renovate the building, using the rest of the $3.245m to turn it into a new senior center. The funds would also go to a generator for emergency power outages.
The present center does not fit the town's needs as, among other issues, seniors have trouble getting to the second floor and there is not enough space nor parking.
Most of the residents that came to the public hearing were seniors, and the mayor suggested using federal grants, as the cost of the project could be over $5m. Although the building itself is acceptable, the kitchen and bathrooms are not handicap accessible and windows, shingles, and walls will need replacing. The council and residents agreed upon using the building, although some had concerns about cost and space.
Votes can be cast on Tuesday, March 28 at Center 375 from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm. Developers often use Posters to show town councils how they plan to design and build projects such as a senior center.
