On the morning of February 6, Manchester schools near Vernon held a breakfast meeting at the East Side Neighborhood Resource Center to discuss parental involvement in students' school life. The Hartford Foundation of Public Giving awarded their schools with a grant totaling over $700,000 to get the community more involved in their children's education.
Director of teaching and learning Scott Ratchford will supervise the office of family and community engagement, which will use the grant money to operate.
With some concerns expressed by parents not wanting to interact with the school system or believing it does not listen to the community, Ratchford stated that he believes parents need to trust schools more, and that educators need to leave jargon out of the conversation when explaining the community's role in education.
The grant will also fund to improve resource centers for families with elementary school children that promote strong family ties and the use of community resources. The director of Education Investments of the Hartford Foundation, Sara Sneed, stated that the organization is happy to aid the school system in improving its relationship with the surrounding community.
Having information on the new office of family and community engagement will be important for families. A printing company could Print out mailers for the school system and provide Brochures in schools for the community to peruse.Get a Free Quote for Brochures Get a Free Quote for Print
