Rockville High School in Vernon will see some new courses available next semester, including one using fantasy sports to teach business and math.
Every member of the Vernon Board of Education voted in favor of four new classes and a small change in graduation requirements. The classes to be added are Stagecraft, CCE Career Explorations, Business and Math Concepts Through Sports, and Writing Center.
Business and computer science department Charles Martucci stated that his students would often talk about fantasy sports, which inspired Business and Math Concepts Through Sports. He wrote the course in one year, and it will launch just in time for football season. Using a salary cap and the value of each player, students have to look at real sports data during the NFL season and manage their team accordingly. They must create performance reports detailing the successes and failures of the games that week.
An employee of the Baltimore Ravens whom Martucci taught will help with the class, which will challenge the students' writing skills and integrate Microsoft Excel. Fellow teachers and Andrew Rockett, Rockville's principal, are excited to see it through and possibly participate against the students.
For the new course involving fantasy football, the school might need business Forms for the students to fill out in order to sign players to their fantasy team, and to create more of a business atmosphere.
