Vernon officials have come up with a way to make parking more accessible at the Metra Prairie View station.
According to Daniel Didech, supervisor of the Vernon Township, a large number of students at Stevenson High School were parking close to Buffalo Grove at the start of the academic year and walking to school, which is around a mile away from the area between Route 22 and Main Street. He said that commuters need the spaces that students take and managing the parking lot is a major task.
To alleviate the situation, the town has given Prairie View Station extended permits to students but there are also daily passes that anyone can buy. Since school started and use of the lot has skyrocketed, the town can only give 60 yearly and quarterly passes to students. The town manages the station lot and has put in place a policy to give students access to Peterson Park parking spaces. The parking lot is less than a mile from the commuter station and passes are available for students there.
Students can enter Stevenson High on Port Clinton Road in the back door which also allows students to use sidewalks. The school has parking spaces available with passes for a single day and there are buses available.
Information about parking can be broadcast with the help of school Flyers and other printed means.
