New restaurant offers Caribbean flair

Jamaican Kitchen opened in Vernon Circle on September 11, with its official grand opening following on September 14.

Timothy Ackert, a state representative, and Daniel Champagne, Mayor of Vernon attended the opening, which added another flavor to the table of diverse cuisine and restaurants in the town. Both greeted the establishments into the area with written decrees.

Local restauranteur and Subway chain owner Milton Jackson created Jamaican Kitchen, stating that he was constantly thinking about 243 Hartford Turnpike, where the new restaurant now sits. The property had been empty for a while, and passing it by in his car would remind him of his idea for a new restaurant.

The inspiration behind Jamaican Kitchen is Jackson's family, who live in Montego Bay. Over the years, he has collected several recipes from them. Inside the restaurant is a mural of Montego Bay.

Jackson is working with Carlos Ferguson, a local chief, to create traditional food with a signature flair. When guests entered the establishment, he says they immediately talked about how fresh it smelled. Favorites on the menu included fritters and patties made of vegetables and meat. In addition, there is curry and jerk-flavored meals that come in lunch and dinner portions.
