New program at Manchester YWCA

Vernon's neighboring city Manchester is set to add a YW Career Women program to their Young Women's Christian Association branch thanks to the Hartford Region's YWCA.

The YWCW gives schooling to mothers of low-income families in order to start a career. The CT Association for Human Services, Manchester Adult Continuing Education, MACC Charities, Work Force Solutions, the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Move UP!, and Manchester Community College are some of the organizations working with the YWCA to make it possible.

According to Nikia Newkirk, the YWCW Career Pathway Navigator, mothers will acquire skills so they can go to college or get a good job. It hopes to help at least 25 women acquire a job in industries such as healthcare, technology, business, and engineering within the next three years. The mothers will receive case management and individual tutoring for college before spending four weeks with a rigorous curriculum that includes life skills, college and career preparation, and wellness training.

The program has shown success at Capital Community College so it made sense to expand the program especially when the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving gave them a grant. YWCA Hartford Region's Chief Executive Officer Deborah Ullman says in the 40 years of the Manchester YWCA, they have had multiple programs and the community cooperates with each other. Programs such as these help to expand the workforce and encourage new businesses to start in surrounding areas, and so this program will be good for Manchester residents and businesses in Vernon and other surrounding towns.
