Manchester CERT seeking hands

Vernon residents looking to become CERT members can head over to neighboring city Manchester. It is looking to gain more volunteers.

Members of the Community Emergency Response Team, or CERTs, are useful when a town is facing a disaster, whether natural or otherwise, and professional emergency agencies are not available. Many times, first responders have to prioritize whom they can get to and cannot help those who are not in immediate danger but need some type of aid. CERTs lend their assistance in these smaller cases.

Those trained in CERT techniques are not required to be a member but if they do, they will learn about running a shelter, using a ham radio, and information on police and fire services. Members are divided into five groups to operate radios, do search and rescue, run shelters, aid police and fire departments, and manage the Emergency Operations Center.

Organisations or teams use Promotional Products such as shirts printed with their name and logo to identify members to the public.

Classes start late February from 6:30pm to 9:30pm on Thursdays and are free. Members must be 18 in order to respond to an emergency but minors can be trained in CERT and help the team. Those wanting to join the team or have any questions should contact team coordinator Donald Janelle within the business day.
