A Vernon resident and member of New England's International Supermodified Association has earned a sure-fire starting position at the 58th Annual Budweiser International Classic 200 race.
The eight starters of the most distinguished race in the supermodified circuit, including local star Rob Summers, were announced on June 30 and were based on the outcomes of previous supermodified races. From 2008 up until this year, drivers in a guaranteed position had car owner status. At the start of this year's International Classic, they are considered drivers.
Summers has raced in the No. 74 car for Patco Transportation/Reed Salvage and finished in the top five of three races. He came in second place at the ISMA Supermodified race and is also second in overall standings behind Jon McKennedy. Neither has ever been a starter in the International Classic.
Starters of the race come from six states around the nation. The International Classic will take place August 31 at Oswego Speedway in New York and carries a prize of over $100,000 in value. Racers who did not guarantee a spot in the race must come within four tenths of a second during their time trials to participate in the race.
In preparation for races, event organizers often turn to banner printing companies as they look to direct participants and spectators, and draw attention to sponsors.
