Early childhood organization honors legislators

The CT Early Childhood Alliance Children's Champion for 2015 is Vernon, Coventry, and Tolland representative Tim Ackert.

The organization, dedicated to advocacy and early childhood outreach, recognized Ackert and 25 other Connecticut legislators throughout the year. It honors political officials who advocate for young children's development and education each year.

Ackert stated that he enjoys working with the Early Childhood Alliance and appreciates the organization’s dedication to young children. The award was presented at the Town Hall Annex in Coventry before he met with the early childhood center's students and faculty.

The coordinator of Coventry's STEPS program, Kathryn Hassler, praised Ackert for his work with the program and keeping it well funded, as well as other early childhood programs in the area. Several programs were in danger of budget cuts or being defunded, but representatives passed bills that allowed staff to finish their education and promoted early childhood health.
CAEYC executive director and co-chair of the CT Early Childhood Alliance, Karen Rainville, commented that legislation seemed to be the topic of 2015 for the organization, and its supporters in the political field have been helpful in that regard.

The organization could help parents with young children by making Calendars reminding them when vaccinations are due and making notes on seasonal dangers like the flu. The calendar could feature local children in costumes in front of a themed background.
