Coast Guard offers nautical course

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Auxiliary will offer a course on boating safety in Vernon next month.

Students will meet at Rockville High School, and obtain a Safe Boating Certificate for the state of Connecticut. Certified individuals can go boating recreationally.

The 'About Boating Safety' course teaches the basics of boating and information for earning a Connecticut Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation. A person of legal age who has a CPWO can navigate recreational and personal vessels under 66 feet long. Boaters with personal vessels often name their boat and have a unique Logo Design on the side. Those who finish the course may receive boating insurance discounts from insurance companies.

Rockville High is located at 70 Loverland Hill Road. The course will be on Tuesdays for four weeks. The cost to register is $45, and interested parties can go online to the Vernon Regional Adult Based Education site to register. For more information, call 860-870-6060.

March 2 is the last day to register and fees are required before the class begins. First responders and senior citizens can get a $10 discount, but they must register by phone.

Those who complete the class will receive a Certification of Completion from the USCG Auxiliary, which they may use to get a State of Connecticut Boating Certificate. The state certificate costs $50. Students must pass About Boating Safety with an 80% or higher.

The course starts on March 10 and ends on March 31. Class is from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
