Barbecue brings community together

Residents of Manchester near Vernon rounded off their summer with a barbecue, which included children's activities, music, and appearances from local officials.

The town of Manchester, Board of Education, Manchester Police Department, and the Department of Neighborhood and Families hosted the August 27 get-together held at the apartments in Squire Village.

Some of the money that went towards the activities and food came from Target, along with several volunteers who work for the store. Scott Ratchford, the director of Family and Community Engagement, was grill master for the evening and was in charge of feeding more than 200 people. He said that the barbecue was a good example of how communities can come together as a team to help local young people.

Students from several schools, including Martin, Bowers, and Verplanck, also attended. There were games, ice cream, arts and crafts, temporary tattoos, and information for locals and their children.

Manchester Police Department officials encouraged residents to come to them for help instead of fearing them, and they gave out 200 Backpacks to children during the event. Community police supervisor Marc Hughes regularly put on movies and kickball games during the summer.

The police department or any of the community organizations could hire brochure printers to create pamphlets for parents detailing the services theyprovides, and the community-focused work they engage in.
