Annual parade and essay contest to honor veterans

Middle school students from around the state are writing essays for a chance to participate in the Connecticut Veterans Parade.

Those who would like to emulate Vernon Center Middle School seventh grade student Amie Lee, who took home first place last year, have just over a month to submit their entries.

Students selected will also attend a recognition ceremony to read their essay and be given a certificate and a special U.S. Flag at the Connecticut State Capitol's Hall of Flags.

Contest entries must be written by a 2014-15 school year middle school student in Connecticut. Students must finish the sentence "I Want to Say THANK YOU to a Veteran Because..." in 500 words or fewer.

One winner and two runners-up will be selected by the judges, who will weigh up grammar, punctuation, spelling, and understanding of the topic.

During the 15th annual parade, there will be a moment of silence and tolling of church bells to honor those who have sacrificed their lives.

Towns use Banners as part of the event's decor and to mark off parade routes. A banner printing company could therefore come in useful to organizers trying to draw attention to the proceedings through bright colors and attractive designs.

Entries must be submitted by September 26, and the parade date has been set for November 2.
