What's Happening in Norwalk, CT…

Victorian holiday being offered at Mansion

Those Norwalk denizens looking for something different this holiday season could consider the Magnificent Victorian Holiday at the Mansion: Splendor and Tradition through the Decades.

Those who turn up for this exhibit and tour will find the mansion decorated in historic fashion, with different rooms displaying Christmas decorations that were common during the Victorian period in England, divided by floor.

The decorations are meant to showcase different ornamentation during the decades from the 1850s to the 1890s. Also on display will be tabletop trees, which were popular during that time, each with distinctive ornaments. During later years, the big trees that are common today began to take over and are showcased in the rooms showing off the later years.

The seasonal exhibit will coincide with the Mansion’s hidden treasure exhibit, which is being run to showcase unique artifacts owned by the Lockwood and Mathews families. Picture taking is encouraged for conversion to postcard or stationery printing in the New Year.

Tour hours run Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 4:00 pm, until January 4. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $6 for the youngsters, although the mansion requests that only children over the age of eight are brought for visits as there are many breakable ornaments about. The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is located at 295 West Avenue, Norwalk.
