New middle school under construction in Greenwich

Construction continues on the Central Middle School in Greenwich, which broke ground in December.

The work completed so far includes the installation of the construction fence, the removal of trees approved to allow for this, the removal of topsoil, and preparation for the foundation and site utilities.

Work to be completed this month will include the start of masonry work for the gymnasium, installation of foundation systems and their waterproofing, and preparation for the start of the steel construction.

The building, when completed, will be 125,000 square feet, reaching two stories tall, and is located north of the current middle school. Such sites often rely on banner printing to keep residents informed of the progress.

When finished, there will be a secure main entrance on the first floor, which will be the focal point for assembly spaces such as the gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, and media center. On the same level there will be suites for counseling and the main office, spaces for visual and performing arts, a lab and wood shop, and family and consumer science.

The second floor will house the academic classrooms designed to allow in natural daylight, and three academic pods to support the two teams at each grade level. There will be specialty services between the pods to provide access to outdoor courtyard spaces.

It is expected that the new middle school will be ready for the 2026-2027 academic year.
