Greenwich receives funds for tree initiative

Greenwich is one of the communities that will receive funding from an Urban and Community Forestry Trees for Communities grant from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT-DEEP).

This grant program supports projects related to urban forestry that increase tree cover and contribute to low canopy communities. Activities for projects that are funded will include community outreach, urban wood utilization, workforce development, and tree planting and maintenance.

The total amount of the grant is $950,000 that will be distributed to nine projects across Connecticut. Greenwich will receive $49,536 for the Byram Branches project. News of such awards and their benefits for a community is often disseminated with flyer printing.

CT-DEEP said that the Bryam initiative will plant 100 native trees in both private and public properties. There will be in-kind support from the town of Greenwich to expand plantings in the neighborhood. CT DEEP added that this project will boost biodiversity, reduce the risk of floods and heat, and build environmental equity through engagement, education, and long-term stewardship.

Beth Evans, Director of Environmental Affairs for Greenwich, said that the town will engage in public education and outreach and will be working with the Parks and Recreation department for the installation of the trees. Evans said that they will not only get trees, but they will be planted at the right time of the year and be in appropriate places.
