Greenwich starts early reading program

The early literacy initiative of 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten has been launched by the Greenwich Library.

This is designed to create a love of reading and prepare children for success in the academic world. The program is self-paced and invites families to read with their children a total of 1,000 Books before they start kindergarten. Those interested in the program need to register their child on the library’s website, and then stop by the Children’s Desk to receive a registration folder and tote bag. When a book is read to a child, it can then be recorded in a log.

Families will receive special patches that can be ironed on their tote bag at 100, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 Books read. When 1,000 Books are read, the library will give each family a free book to continue the reading journey of their child. Any child from birth to kindergarten can participate in the program. Books from anywhere can be acquired and read, not just the library.

Such programs can benefit from flyer printing to spread the word throughout a town, as it provides a cost-effective way to reach a wide audience and boost local engagement.

The head of the Children Services team at the Greenwich Library, Krishna Grady, said that reading one book a night can add up and can give a child a head start in their academic careers.
