At the end of the month, the beach at Greenwich Point Park will once again be the host for the Greenwich Kite Flying Festival, which takes place every year. Hosts for the event are The Greenwich Arts Council, the India Cultural Center of Greenwich (ICC), and the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Kite Flying festival celebrates the start of the spring season and is a family event that also focuses on the arts, recreation, and culture. In addition to kite flying, there will be live music and lunch on the beach. Smart Kids Toys have donated Gift Certificates, which will be raffled off during the festival. Such events often turn to poster printing to promote themselves.
Those who wish to participate only need to bring a kite. Everyone who does participate in the festival will receive a participation ribbon. For those who do not have a kite, the ICC and the Metinko/Kniffen Family will be handing out delta kites, which are easy to fly, on a first-come, first-served basis. They will also be hosting demonstration of a patang fighter kite.
It was as early as 200 BC when kite flying began in Asia. Kites in India had the distinguishing style of a patang, which came to be known as a fighter kite, and this is still the most popular kind of kite flown in the country.
The festival will take place beginning at 11:30 am on Saturday, April 27.
