The designation of a HeartSafe Community has recently been renewed for the town of Greenwich.
Dr. Raul Pino, Commissioner of Public Health for Connecticut, stated that Greenwich continues to be committed to improving the response to cardiac events and caring for its residents by using various methods, including defibrillation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, advanced care, and the ‘Chain of Survival’ of early 9-1-1 access.
Tracy Schietinger, Executive Director of Greenwich Emergency Medical Service (GEMS), responded in saying that this renewal exemplifies how much the town is committed to saving the lives of its residents. GEMS trains thousands of individuals each year in CPR, which plays a large role in the chain of survival.
The HeartSafe designation was first given to Greenwich and it became the first in the state to receive it in recognition of its efforts to increase the survival rate of those who experienced sudden cardiac arrest. In its attempts to combat the deaths that can result from sudden cardiac arrest, automated external defibrillators (AED) are provided by the town in all police cruisers, there are over 50 AEDs for public access throughout the town, and paramedics are part of the response team of every medical emergency.
