Greenwich dedicates weeks events to diabetes awareness

The American Diabetes Association and the town of Greenwich are working together to hold a Diabetes Awareness Week this month.

According to Peter Tesei, First Selectman of Greenwich, the local headquarters will be working with the American Diabetes Association to put together a program to educate the public on how many people are affected by diabetes, and its rapid growth. In Connecticut, there are 930,000 people with diabetes, and 60,000 of them are in Fairfield County.

The kick-off of the week will be an ‘Under the Tent’ event hosted by Whole Foods Market of Greenwich. A dietitian will be discussing healthy lifestyle choices, Greenwich Hospital will be taking blood pressure, and diabetes risk tests will be given.

Also to get the week underway, Nancy Ryan, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator from Greenwich Hospital, will present a talk at the Greenwich Library on how to fight diabetes. At the end of the week, Ryan and Whole Foods Market will sponsor a Lunch and Learn program. to which town employees are invited.

Diabetes Awareness Week has been declared for next week, beginning on Monday, September 15. Organizers have no doubt been working with local flyer printing companies to provide more information about the activities of the week, and to encourage as many people as possible to attend and learn.
