An organization has been set up to introduce golf to young ladies in middle school.
GirlGolf was founded by Claire Yu, a junior at Rye Country Day School in Greenwich, to provide the opportunity for young girls, particularly those from underrepresented communities, to experience golf, and encourage them towards a career path in sport if they so choose.
The non-profit organization will be hosting its first event this spring, which will include food, drinks, instruction, and prizes for participants at the E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course in Stamford.
Yu and GirlGolf are raising awareness for the event by asking people to donate golf clubs and other equipment. Poster printing can be used to inform residents of such events and for the need for donated equipment.
Yu is an accomplished golfer, and won the Women’s Town Championship of Greenwich in 2022, when she was 16 years old. She has always wanted girls to be more involved in a sport, and believes that golf teaches important values such as humility, self-reliance, and honesty.
She added that the sport is typically dominated by men, and she has faced many difficulties in forming a girls' golf team at her school. Yu therefore founded GirlGolf to introduce girls to golf in an unintimidating and fun environment.
The organization's first "gateway" event will take place in May, and is open to the public.
