Work on improved bus transit begins in Aurora

Ground has been broken on the Aurora phase of the East Colfax Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

This phase starts at Yosemite Street and will go east to Interstate 225. The project was started in Denver in 2024. The BRT is a bus service that has light rail elements, such as dedicated bus lanes and signal priority at intersections to address the typical delays of bus services.

Mike Coffman, mayor of Aurora, said that unlike the part of the project that is in Denver, the buses of the BRT in Aurora will run in the outside lanes. He said that what was done in Denver was very disruptive to local businesses and he did not want this repeated in his city.

Coffman commented that the growing transportation demands of the region needs to be addressed by BRT service. He said:

“With BRT, this corridor will make travel between downtown Denver and I-225 in Aurora better for the long-term, improving travel time, providing more reliable service, and making it safer for people traveling along the corridor.”

The project will bring a bus to stations every four minutes as well as new and enhanced transit stations. There will also be improved bike and pedestrian connections. More details on such projects and their benefits for residents can be provided with flyer printing.

The total project of 10 miles is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
