Aurora receives award for community development plan

Downtown Colorado Inc. has awarded a Colorado Downtown Excellence Award for 2026 in the Best Plan Large Community category to the city of Aurora for its Colfax Community Vision and Action Plan.

News of such awards and their implications for a community is often spread with Flyers or banner printing.

Downtown Colorado Inc. said this is a very inclusive and actionable plan that engages a wide range of stakeholders and lays the foundation for investment in the long term through the creation of important development and funding entities.

The city partnered with Progressive Urban Management Associates last year and worked to create the Colfax Community Vision and Action Plan. This will be a long-term plan for redeveloping East Colfax Avenue and the areas of surrounding Northwest Aurora. There were 24 events for the public with over 870 attendees that helped to create the plan in addition to feedback from more than 100 organizations, property owners, business owners, and residents in the area.

Voters approved the creation of the Aurora Downtown Development Authority (DDA). Its task is to create a new vision for part of East Colfax Avenue and to adopt the development plan with approval by the Aurora City Council.

A non-profit organization, the Community Development Corporation, will also be created to use different sources of funding to cover a larger area. These organizations will support local businesses, make public improvements, and promote economic growth in the area.
