The design for the upcoming Station 18 of Aurora Fire Rescue (AFR) has been unveiled. This new fire station signals meaningful progress toward providing a new public safety facility for growing eastern section of Aurora.
The Aurora Highlands Visitor Center will undergo adaptive reuse to accommodate fire apparatus, the entire fire company, and fire equipment. The building is off East 38th Place.
The station has a planned span of 9,600 square feet and the first station to be completed as part of Aurora Highlands Main Street. This is within The Aurora Highlands and is a mixed-use district. Positioned in a central location, the facility is expected to become a prominent feature of the growing community.
Important features of the new station will be a state-of-the-art fitness room; three drive-through apparatus bays; dormitories for officers with a private bathroom; and three dormitories for firefighters with two shared bathrooms. These features will support the health and wellness of firefighters, rapid emergency response, and the operational needs of a fire company that operates three shifts.
The facility will feature AFR’s vintage 1955 Seagrave fire engine in a glass-enclosed display area, allowing visitors to easily view one of the historic apparatuses of the department. Aurora Firefighters Local 1290 owned the fire engine, whose nickname is “Big John,” and was the main fire engine for Stations 4 and 5 during the operation of these fire stations.
